This stunning vintage silk scarf is steeped in lore and symbolism
Ok story time...
Designed in the 'Dunhuang' style - the unique artistic tradition found in the Mogao Caves, Dunhuang China - a major cultural and commercial hub on the ancient silk road.
This style is a remarkable blend of Chinese Indian, Central Asian and other regional cultures. It is primarily expressed through thousands of Buddhist murals and sculptures created over a millennium, from the 4th to the 14th centuries.
It features the flying Apsaras - They originated from Indian mythology as celestial nymphs and are associated with the clouds, water music and dance. Their primary role is to entertain the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the heavenly paradise with music and dance.
The flying Apsaras embody transcendence, freedom, beauty and femininity. Their effortless, wingless flight, supported by flowing ribbons symbolises the souls ascension and a state of ethereal weightlessness known as the 'aesthetics of motion'
The logo on the tag is the Sanskrit character 'Om' - the primordial sound of the universe.
The red logo in the silk is most likely the 'hanko' a type of personal seal used in Japan. Historically it was used by emperors, shoguns and samurai to authenticate documents.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it Sis!
